Moral philosophy and Ethics • Philosophers(哲學家) look for and then critically examine, concepts and assumptions that are generally “taken for granted”. • 各種說法、想法、信念等的根本問題： • What do you mean by that? • How come? • So what? • Why should I, or you, or anyone believe that? • Moral philosophy(道德哲學): the study of values (“goods” and “bads”)

Moral philosophy and Ethics • Ethics (倫理學) deals with some general concepts of values as obligation(義務), justice(正義), rights(權利), duties(責任), virtue(美德), beneficence(慈善), etc. • Moral philosophy deals with the evaluation of personal acts, conduct, motivation and policy. • Person(個體): sentience (感性)、consciousness (意識)、reasoning (理性)、self-motivated activity (自我動機能力)、capacity to communicate(溝通), conceptualize(概念化), and to act on principle(原則)、a concept of oneself and recognition of the personhood of other persons. (自我與他人個體價值)

  4. Moral responsibility • “Moral responsibility”(道德責任) normally implies knowledge(知識), capacity(能力), choice(選擇), and value significance(價值意義). • Knows of this requirement (知道) • Is capable of performing it (表現能力) • Can freely choose (選擇) whether or not to do it • The performance thereof affects the welfare and/or liberty of other beings.(價值)

  5. 倫理學的四個類型 • 價值系統的提出：中國的論語、前柏拉圖時期的希臘倫理思想、聖經。(應用) • 倫理概念的語意分析：希臘羅馬時代對德性和幸福的詞義辨析。(理論) • 倫理學的科學研究：從自然科學和社會科學的角度，對倫理和道德現象進行客觀的研究。道德心理學和道德社會學。當代的法蘭克福學派、羅爾斯倫理學。 (應用) • 倫理的形上學：形上學是指倫理學中偏重演一邏輯推論系統的研究。 (理論)

  6. Environmental ethics • Environmental ethics is concerned with the issue of responsible personal conduct(負責任的個體行為) with respect to natural landscapes(自然景觀), resources(資源), species(物種), and non-human organisms(人以外的生物).

  7. What is Environmental ethics? • 一般而言， 「環境倫理學」(EE)是系統化探討人類和其環境的倫理(道德)關係。 • 「環境倫理學」假定道德規範可主導人類與自然世界的相處的行為。 • 「環境倫理學」的理論必須要能解釋： • 這些規範(norms) 是什麼？ • 人類有何責任？對什麼有責任？ • 這些責任，是否合理 (justified)？

Einstein: • Science is the attempt to make the chaotic diversity of our sense-experience correspond to a logically uniform system of thought. • Ernst Mayr: • Science is not an accumulation of facts, rather science is the search for an understanding of the world around us.

  11. Science and Ethics • 我們對世界的了解，以及我們對各事物的評價和價值觀，都顯著的受到科學傳達給我們的內容，所影響。 • 面對環境問題的挑戰時，科學與倫理，兩者都是必要，倘若我們要有改善的進展。 • 科學沒有倫理，是盲目的、 倫理沒有科學，是虛空的。 • Science without ethics is blind; • Ethics without science is empty.

  22. 2008年10月與11月 • 環境倫理學之父 羅斯頓來台教授 • 國立成功大學邀請國際級大師「環境倫理學之父」羅斯頓（Holmes Rolston）教授，擔任客座特聘講座，自10月起至11月中旬於成大講學，並推出一系列的環境講座，針對日益嚴重的環境問題及未來所面臨的考驗，從環境倫理學的領域剖析遵循的法則及解決之道，為國內環境保護議題注入新思維。

  23. 環境倫理學之父羅斯頓,訪台講座,10-11月 • 文/小地方 10月 25日, 2008 • 羅斯頓簡介：羅斯頓（Holmes Rolston III）在學術界中被稱為「環境倫理學之父」，是形塑環境倫理學這個學科的基本特性、範疇和議題的學者。他的環境倫理學是由內在價值所引發之責任的倫理，中心概念就是「內在價值」和「整全主義」。羅斯頓最具影響力的作品是1975在＜倫理學期刊＞所發表具突破性的文章，以及1988《環境倫理學》一書中所表達其成熟、整全的倫理學理論。他的學術專長在於探討「科學與宗教」交織互動中最核心的議題，特別是在「生態系與倫理學」方面的論述更是貢獻卓著。

  39. 接續新聞資訊 • 撒下花種的豐原市公所估計，這兩株波斯菊，市價最多兩元。警方找來豐原市公所清潔隊林姓隊員，林員指認說，為美化新闢道路，清潔隊在路旁空地撒了波斯菊種子。警方進一步請林員估算價值，林員認為頂多一株一元，也同意與高婦和解。和解書中，高婦寫道「因不知是公所植栽而犯錯，經公所林員諒解達成和解，以新台幣兩元和解」。高婦說，原以為和解就沒事了，但警方仍依竊盜罪將她銬上手銬移送，先送到警分局，再送到台中地檢署，檢察官晚上近十時裁定釋回。折騰八小時，才獲檢釋回。嫌犯被扣上手銬腳鐐，偵訊從派出所轉到分局，再移送地檢署，您或許認為，應該是個重行罪犯吧，這位偷挖路邊兩株菊花的婦人，就遭受到這樣的待遇，會不會如婦人家屬所言，太過分了？警方一再強調，這是逮捕人犯的既定程序，也是法定的權力，是否執法過當，可受到社會公評。 (2008/2/6, ref. 自由)

  40. 問題 0.3 • 台東大學勞動教育課，學生自嘲似台傭。台東大學一年級學生必修的「勞動教育」課，遭學生及家長質疑根本沒看過老師到課，只派來工讀生點名，結果照樣打出成績。有人自認為認真掃地，上學期卻只有六十幾分，自嘲被學校當「台傭」。校方的說法是，勞動服務教育是學校學則規定．目的是為培養學生愛護環境及動手勞作的美德，學校不會把學生當台傭，所以不會有老師去盯同學清掃，學校也相信受過12年學校教育及18年家庭教育的學生有能力拿掃把。勞動教育這門課是東大一年級必修課程，每週兩小時，由學生從事校內環境打掃，雖未列入學期平均成績，但不及格須重修，及格才能畢業，且分數未達80分就不能申請在校工讀。(2009/2/19, ref. 自由) • 討論：台東大學的勞動教育課，校方的和學生的說法，何者較有道理？你贊同哪一方？請說明理由。

  41. 問題 0.4 • 半年舉發400件，高市檢舉達人，賺5萬2。車主趁等紅燈空檔哈根菸，沒想到，早就被檢舉達人張先生盯上，從抽菸到亂丟菸蒂，張先生全都錄。高市環保局六科科長董文傑：「在半年的期間裡面，大概檢舉了大概400件左右，那依照我們的經驗是，6成到7成是可以成立的。」真的是叫你第一名啦，高雄市環保局說，去年檢舉排行榜冠軍，是一名50歲退休的張姓男子，不願在鏡頭前曝光的他，半年舉發400多件，違規者付1500元罰金後，環保局會撥35%，也就是每件525元當作獎金，最後檢舉達人實領5萬2。董文傑：「違規的時間，還有違規的地點，以及詳細的車牌號碼，送到我們環保局來，我們會做審核，初步的審核，如果這些要件是符合的，那我們給他(違規者)開單告發。」(2009/2/19, ref.
