  8. Government • Village council. • Made up of elders, titled men, and men who have established themselves in community.

  14. Art • Earliest art forms from the 10th century. • Wooden Statues made as spirit replicas and made to communicate. • Use wood, clay, mud, metals. • Masks, pottery. • Women usually draw on house walls.

  15. Clothing • Hot weather. • Men wear loose clothing, like robes or long shirts, usually made from cotton. • Women wear “wrappers”

Customs • Marriage: Hosted at the brides house. • She first sells boiled eggs to the guests to show she can have a shop, and make money. • Than brides fathers fills wooden cup with palm wine and gives to bride, while groom hides between guests. The guests distract her while she looks for the groom and when found he drinks from the cup. • The couples dance and guests wish them luck by throwing money around them or sticking it to their foreheads. • Usually have Christian wedding after, where bride is followed into church by single girl friends and guest bless them by throwing money at them.

  17. Customs • Birth • On the 8th day, the male baby is prepared for circumcision. • On 28th day naming ceremony. • Each event with a feast with family.

  18. Customs • Death • Looked at as passing away from existing world into spirit world. • Usually buried in the village at the persons home. • They have a wake. • Ceremonies include singing and traditional dancing. • However, Church over took many traditions.

  19. Customs • Kola nut ceremony to welcome guests into the house or village. • Present nut, break nut, serve nut. • New yam festival in the beginning of the yam season.

  20. Cuisine • Yams • Palm oil • Palm wine • Rice • Milk • Fruits • Vegetables • Beef • Chicken • Goat • Fish • Eat what is available • Mostly soups
