  1. Gender Inequality and Sexual Harassment Chaeri Jeong & Jason

  2. The Pay Gap • The ratio of women who work outside home for wages is gradually growing. • 1 to 2 (today) • The percentage of women who are in the workforce is higher in center of the U.S., (ie. Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin…) • More than 65 to 75%

  3. US Women who work full time average only 68% of what men are paid • Child Penalty: Women missing out on work experience while they care for children

  4. Even in colleges, gender gap in pay begins • Men start out at higher salaries than women • Only 8 of the 500 top corporations are headed by women

  5. The Cracking Glass Ceiling • Glass Ceiling: the mostly invisible barrier that keeps women from advancing to the top levels at work • Women are steered into human resources or public relations field • Less capable of leadership • Women lack mentors  Successful executives who take an interest in them and teach them the ropes. • No opportunities to develop leadership skills

  6. Glass Ceiling • Not all the time • Rich husbands… • Glass escalator • “You’re a guy so you get promoted/paid more/…”

  7. Gender and control of workers • Men are real workers but women are there too… • No matter what your job is you’re primarily a woman (Karen Hossfeld) • Encouraging them to think of themselves as women workers makes them easier to control • When their bosses flirted with them, they were less inclined to file grievances

  8. Sexual Harassment • Unwelcome sexual attention at work or school, which may affect a person’s job or school performance or create hostile environment… • Structural Problem • More than doing obnoxious things • Abusing their positions of authority in order to force unwanted sexual activities on women

  9. The meaning of sexual harassment is vague and shifting • Court cases constantly change what is considered as sexual harassment and what is not • Ie) photographing a woman’s legs
