The ADHD Controversy: Opposing Perspectives Rebecca Subkis-Fox
The Traditional Model • ADHD is primarily characterized by an inability to focus or pay attention with a main symptom of being easily distracted.
ADHD and Insatiability • Individuals with ADHD have trouble matching their attention to the task at hand and often pick the wrong things to concentrate on. • People with ADHD have insatiable appetites for stimulation and need lots of excitement.
The Barkley Model • ADHD is a primarily a problem with executive functioning: • Affected Functions • Issues with behavioral inhibition • Difficulties with Meta-cognitive Knowledge and Awareness • Problems self regulating
The Debate • ADHD is over Diagnosed or Nonexistent: • ADHD is a trendy diagnoses that psychologists have just recently started using. The symptoms that children exhibit are probably a result of poor educational models, children watching too much TV, or eating too much sugars and food colorings. Psycho stimulants have too many potential side effects and are unnecessary and harmful.

ADHD is a Real Illness Resulting from Biological Factors • ADHD is a result of issues in the brain located in the prefrontal cortex, and psycho stimulants can be helpful for the reduction of symptoms • The prefrontal cortex is an area of the brain that has been linked to the performance of executive functions. • An interesting note about the myth that ADHD results from brain injury.
