  1. Ancient Minoans Greece’s first Civilization on the Island of Crete

  2. Crete Lived on the Island of Crete off the main Greek coast Capital city of Knossos- with magnificent temples and buildings with colorful walls Amazing artwork

  3. Ancient Minoans Dominated trade in the region from about 2000-1400 BC (600 years!!!) Produced amazing pottery, swords, and jewelry and traded that all over the Mediterranean world We have found their pottery in Egypt and other places

  5. Language Developed the first known written language in Europe Today it is called Linear A – we do not know how to read it It is related to a later Greek language called Linear B-which we can read

  6. Culture • Studies show that men and women had a fairly equal standing in society • There was a fair amount of equality in money too

  7. What happened to them? • Ended around 1200 B.C. • No one knows for sure what happened

  8. Theories Volcanic eruption of nearby Thera (one of the largest ever in history) plus the resulting tsunamis might have wiped them out Nearby Greeks may have invaded and conquered them (Mycenaean's) Or both…volcano made them weak and prone to attack later on

  9. How do we know about them? • Archaeology- excavations first done in early 1900’s on Crete • Writing? – NO…we can’t read theirs • Later Greeks- much of what we know comes from later Greek sources or written sources from other places (like Egypt)

  10. Result- Legends Minoan name comes from the legend of King Minos and the Minotaur (the half bull, half man) who he kept locked up in a labyrinth (a complicated maze) Other Greek myths and legends about them Are they the lost city of Atlantis?
