Mark 1:16-20 Jesus Calls the First Disciples 16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

  12. I. Total commitment to Jesus’ calling Fishing was used by Old Testament prophets as a metaphor for gathering people for judgment. This image fits the transforming power of God’s rule that brings judgment and death to the old (once a fish is hooked, it is fatal consequences for the fish; life cannot go on as before), yet promises a new creation. -NIV Application Commentary

  13. I. Total commitment to Jesus’ calling Christ is a leader that people want to follow, so much they would leave everything that they know and have (Andrew/Peter – their professions and James/John – their family).

  14. APPLICATION The call is there for us now to all be his disciples and followers. Do we truly know what it takes? Find time throughout the week to reflect on the cost of discipleship. Pray that God would change our hearts and lives to fully commit to Jesus’ calling to be His.

  16. II. Total commitment to follow Christ’s leading Christ invites us to come and follow Him The invitation was for a journey together with Him for a lifetime. The relationship established true intimacy with Jesus.

  17. Selection: People were his method. Association: He stayed with them. Consecration: He required obedience. Impartation: He gave himself. Demonstration: He showed them how to live. Delegation: He assigned them work. Supervision: He kept check on them. Reproduction: He expected them to reproduce.
