  3. Volunteer Trends • Early 1900’s – social welfare expanded • Professionalism emerged = less direct service volunteers • Volunteers continued to serve on boards, raise funds, and make policy • 1950’s-1960’s – more service volunteers were recruited to strengthen programs

  4. Why Volunteer? • Desire to help others • Support an issue or cause • Make a difference in their communities • Gaining skills and an advantage for their job/career

Benefits of Volunteers • Increased the quality of services or programs • Cost savings to organization • Increased public support for programs, or improved community relations • Services or levels of service otherwise could not provide • More detailed attention to the people served • Access to specialized skills possessed by volunteers
