The Byzantine Empire, the eastern remnant of the Roman Empire, thrived after the fall of its western counterpart. Capitalized in Constantinople, established by Emperor Constantine, it showcased remarkable leadership under Justinian, who ruled with absolute power and made significant contributions to architecture and law. His reign included the construction of the Hagia Sophia and the codification of Roman laws in the Justinian Code. The empire faced challenges, including the Nika Rebellion and the devastating Plague of Justinian, yet its remarkable legacy endures through cultural and legal advancements.
