Goals of Digital Photography & Web Design Course • Develop skills in obtaining and modifying effective digital images: exposure, cropping, compositing, greytoning, panoramic • Develop skills in web design and production: navigation, imagery, animation
Concurrently one of the goals of McDaniel College -Budapest • Modify the current website to make it more: • Attractive to potential students • Easier to update content for both potential and current students/staff
After thoughtful consideration of the current site, my students have recommended the following changes to • Improve content • Improve imagery • Improve navigation
Content • Relate content more directly to student concerns: more emphasis on 24-hour student life issues (social life, living conditions, courses: i.e. day in the life; what does the campus & housing look like?) • Emphasize those qualities that distinguish the campus from all others ( what is liberal arts?; how does an international clientele impact learning, small size of classes & interactivity)
Content • Aging pages: Means to facilitate regular updating of content from courses/schedules, faculty pages & syllabi, calendar of social events, newspaper: software -Contribute?
Improved Imagery: A picture is worth a thousand words... Current photos do not emphasize student concerns: • What do the facilities look like? classrooms, computer • What do the students and faculty look like? • What does Budapest and the social life look like?
Navigation and Flash • Improved navigation: in some cases materials are not easily found ( i.e.. syllabi; no site map) • Less static & a little flash: sites with tasteful animation (rollovers, layers) suggest a more professional style ( which reflects on back on the campus). • More interactivity: forms for information; forms for campus/class surveys)
Are these changes viable? • Yes: a committee has been established to evaluate the site, and make recommendations which will be implemented by a new webmaster. • A number of current students are eager to help support an improved site with photos and materials.
