  1. Lesson 12 • Conclusions & Cliffhangers by Joshua Raven

  2. Bolivia, Central South America. Jose Antonio lay in his bed after a hot day of farming soybeans on his father’s farm. He shared a bedroom with Carlos, Diego and Sergio, his brothers, who also worked alongside him on the land. He had walked for miles today under the merciless sun, and was glad to finally get to bed... Endings... (p204)

  3. Suddenly Jose Antonio felt a sharp pain in his left hand, and let out a cry. The dog had bitten him, he thought, and he angrily sat up in his bed to scold him. But he couldn’t see the family dog anywhere. Then he noticed in the half light that he was bleeding from his left hand. He quickly placed his right hand over the cut and realised that his finger was missing. It was his second finger: the one next to his little pinky. He made a quick sign of the cross and cried out again in pain, watching with tears in his eyes as his brothers jumped up in their beds. Before long the whole household was awake. Endings... (p205)

  4. With a partner answer the following questions about where you think the next novel will take the story of ‘5fingers’. • What is the significance of losing a finger? • Who will be the lead character in the next novel, and why? • Why do you think the story has moved to South America for the new character, Jose? • In what ways is this scene similar, and also different to the opening of the novel? Think of four more questions as a pair which you could ask the rest of the class. Predictions

  5. What does deduce, infer and interpret mean? These are words used to describe the way in which readers DECODE a text, picking up signs from its information, events or ideas. Deduce, infer or interpret

  6. What clues have you picked up in the novel on where the story line is heading? Consider: • The relationship between Rachel and Lake • The mystery of who took Rachel’s finger • The identity of Samyaza and the Dunamis • The character of Daniel Harcourt • Using these ideas and your own as well, put together a mini-plot summary for the second novel, 5fingers: vortex Text Detectives
