  1. Year 10 Subject Selection Evening SUBJECT CHOICES FOR 2015 LEVEL 1

  2. NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) • First introduced in 2002. (Updated and modified in 2011) • Three (3) levels of achievement are offered: • Year 11 – Level 1 • Year 12 – Level 2 • Year 13 – Level 3 A Scholarship option is available to high achieving student.

  3. NCEA • NCEA gives results about what students know and can do. • Results show: • How well students can do separate skills • How a student compares with others • How well a student performs overall

  4. USING STANDARDS BASED ASSESSMENT. NCEA: • Uses standards to show what student know and can do. • Each subject area has a standard for each topic in the syllabus. Eg. 91027 (Apply algebraic procedures in solving problems) • Standards describe the level of work students need to produce. • Grades are reported for each skill in Achievement Standards: Not achieved the standard, Achieved the standard, Achieved with Merit and Achieved with Excellence. How do credits work? • Every standard in NCEA is worth a set number of credits. • Credits are like points towards a qualification. • Most full year courses should offer between 18 and 24 credits but may be higher in some cases. • These credits could be a mixture of Internally assessed standards and Externally assessed standards. External Standards are mostly written as Examinations in November/December although some are written internally and assessed by External Assessors. EG. Art, Technology, Mathematics MCAT, etc. Internally Standards are assessed and marked by teachers and moderated by NZQA on a yearly bases of pre-selected standards across subject areas.

Certification Requirements NCEALevel 1 • 80 credits = National Certificate of Educational Achievement at each level. • 60 credits at Certificate Level and a further 20 credits from other Levels. • Credits may be banked and used the next year. • Essential Requirements: - 10 credits in Reading, Writing – LITERACY - 10 Credits in Number skills – NUMERACY Numeracy must be achieved through Achieved Standards (AS) or Numeracy Portfolio (US); NOT a mixture of both.

Consistency in Internally Assessed Standards • Teachers check each others marking (Moderation) to ensure the consistency of marking and that standards are maintained. • Schools check teachers’ marking is fair and at the national standard. • National Moderation Panels check samples of marked student work from every school. • These checks are to ensure that schools are assessing accurately and to the same standard as other schools.

NCEA 2015, Level 1 • What kind of program will your student follow: • All subjects at Year 11 will offer credits towards the National Certificate. • In all subjects you will gain credits towards the NATIONAL CERTIFICATE of EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL 1. • How will I gain these qualifications? • Every AS and US is worth a set number of credits. Credits are points that contribute to achieving a qualification. • Students are awarded credits when the reach the standard set for meeting the requirements of the standard.

NCEA Level 1 • When a student has a total of 80 Credits, or higher, an met the Numeracy and Literacy requirements, then she/he has qualified for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement LEVEL 1. • 80 CREDITS. (LEVEL 1 OR HIGHER) • 10 NUMERACY. (EITHER AS OR US, NOT A MIXTURE OF BOTH) • 10 LITERACY. (ENGLISH OR AS THAT PROVIDE LITERACY POINTS)

  10. Literacy and Numeracy • Students must gain 10 credits in Literacy to achieve the Level 1 prerequisite. This can be gained through a number of different subjects. • Students must also gain 10 credits in Numeracy. This can be gained through a number of different subjects. • Numeracy can also be achieved through Portfolio Mathematics. • 30 subjects offer Literacy as part of their standards. 134 Standards @ Level 1. • 9 Subjects offer Numeracy as part of their standards. 28 Standards @ Level 1.

  11. Aiming for the top. In 2007, the Endorsed Certificate was introduced. • 50+ credits at Excellence will achieve an Excellence Endorsement for the Level. • 50+ credits at Merit/Excellence will achieve a Merit Endorsement for the Level. (Excellence will count back to fill Merit should the student fall short)

  12. Subject Endorsement • There is further certification that students can work towards – recognition of Excellence or Merit in a subject. • What is required? Students need fourteen (14) credits at Excellence or Merit level – Three (3) credits must be from Internal assessments and at least three (3) credits from External assessments. • TIP: AIM FOR SUBJECT ENDORSEMENTS AND LEVEL ENDORSEMENT OCCURS NATURALLY!!

  14. Subject Choices • Information Booklet of Subjects. (pdf or cards) Available at the Library, Student Foyer in the Admin Building, Senior Deans Offices and online at www.trident.school.nz. • Subject selection evening with parents and subject heads. • Complete the subject choice sheet with parents and have them signed off by your teacher/TiC or HoD. • Choose six (6) subjects. Important Points. • English and Mathematics are compulsory. • You are expected to select a science and encouraged to select a social science. • Social Science: History, Geography, Business Studies, Accounting and Research and Communications. • Science: Double Science (By invitation only, Grades Dependent), General Science and Science Internal. • Around 35 subject choices available.
