  1. Baptism of Jesus (1:9-11) E-02 An encounter in which Deity confirmed the identity of Jesus. • The purpose of Jesus’ baptism. (Mat 3:15 NKJV) But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. (Luke 7:29 NKJV) And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John. (Luke 7:30 NKJV) But the Pharisees and lawyersrejectedthe will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

  2. Baptism of Jesus (Cont’d) E-02 • The event showed the individuality of the three who are Deity. (Mark 1:10 NKJV) And immediately, coming up from the water, He[Jesus, sjc] saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove, [in bodily form like a dove upon Him, Luke 3:22] (Mark 1:11 NKJV) Then a voice came from heaven[the Father, sjc] , “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

  3. Baptism of Jesus (Cont’d) E-02 • The voice of the Father affirmed the sonship of Jesus (see also Matt. 17:5). (Mark 1:11 NKJV) Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

  4. Baptism of Jesus (Cont’d) E-02 • The presence of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove enabled John to identify Jesus as the Son of God. (John 1:32 NKJV) And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. (John 1:33 NKJV) “I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ (John 1:34 NKJV) “And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

  5. Baptism of Jesus (Cont’d) E-02 • The presence of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove identified Jesus as the one who “baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” (John 1:33 NKJV) “I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

  6. Baptism of Jesus (Cont’d) E-02 • From this encounter we see: • The affirmation of Jesus’ identity: • By the Father (the voice). • By the Holy Spirit (the presence of the dove). • The identification of Jesus by the Holy Spirit as the one who would baptize “with the Holy Spirit.”
