Gifts of Baptism Become a member of the family of God Die to old life and are reborn to new life through Jesus—forgiveness of sin and eternal life Forgiveness of original life Sanctifying grace—God’s dwelling in us that helps to keep us holy; strengthens us to do the right things and deepens our friendship with God Special powers of the Theological virtues

  3. Theological Virtues • Virtues or habits given to us by God, “Theos,” to help us to keep God at the center of our lives. • These special virtues of faith, hope, and love lead us to “know, love, and trust God.” (p. 116 in Christ Our Life textbook) • Faith—belief in God and all that has revealed to us through Church teachings • Hope—trust that God will give us eternal life and all the help necessary for us to get there • Despair and Presumption are sins against Hope • Charity—also known as love; helps us to love God and put Him first in our lives

  4. Cardinal Virtues • These virtues, also known as the “hinge” virtues, are acquired through human effort. They are important if we want to lead a holy life. “They are habits that allow us to do good acts and to give the best of ourselves.” (p. 116 textbook) • Prudence– directs us to decide what is good, seek advice, and reflect on acts before we act • Justice– guides us to respect the rights of others; also makes us want to do something to protect the rights of others • Fortitude—gives us the courage to do what is right even when it is difficult; means being patient, generous, putting up with teasing, and ignoring peer pressure • Temperance—helps us to control our desire for pleasure; stops us from overdoing it in eating, drinking, sex, money, and the way we dress, act, and speak
