Where it all began … M-learning • 2001 – 2004: project to explore potential of mobile technology to deliver literacy and numeracy learning experiences to young adults (16-24) UK CTAD, LSDA, Ultralab • 250 Learners across the country, including homeless, travellers, drop-in centres Sweden • Pupils at 2 City of Stockholm Schools – many refugees Italy • disaffected youth in Salerno • immigrants and disadvantaged youth in Naples www.m-learning.org

What we’ve been doing since then Birmingham Healthy for Life • Young parents and parents-to-be in inner city Birmingham; Practical parenting / health information NRDC Maths4Life Pathfinder • Investigating m-learning to motivate potential numeracy learners NRDC ICT Effective Practice Study • Using m-learning with ESOL learners Promotional materials (work-based) • Sector-based phone and SMS quizzes Care, Cleaning, Logistics, Sex Workers …. • Multiple projects for hard to reach learners in the workplace Foyer (homeless charity) • Skills screeners on a PDA Driving! • Theory test practice questions on your phone Over 1000 learners Many different ages and stages NOT in mainstream provision “m” really does work!

  4. Where it works best • Individual, personal, private • Collaborative, creative • Mix of learning styles • Motivational • Bridge into IT • Blended • with paper-based materials, • with other ICTs, • with everything else you normally do

  5. The mediaBoard • Multi-dimensional “map”: geographical, virtual • Students build with photos, text, audio onto a pre-identified virtual location • Potential for several modes • Extends to more abstract or imaginative concepts too • A mobile blog for teams!!

Students were sent off with challenges to find out more about their town. They needed to ask people and look stuff up, then sent in text messages and pictures to answer the different challenges

  20. Outcomes • Reaches places other learning can’t • Best as part of a blend • Is a collection of bits, not a single thing • Don’t just “teach”, but create, collaborate, communicate • Practice makes perfect: just do it!
