  1. Note-taking systems Learning a good note-taking system can help you get organized, help you learn material better, and save time!

  2. 4 note systems 1 study system

  3. Outlining I. Strengths of system A. System of hierarchy 1. Main ideas and sub ideas 2. Quickly organizes notes B. Reduces writing time 1. Only main ideas written 2. Abbreviations used

  4. II. Weaknesses of system A. Must understand relationship of ideas to take notes B. Must understand sub ideas C. May only work if teacher organizes notes in this way

  5. III. Works well … A. To automatically organize B. For students who mentally organize C. To help you study for tests 1. You can see equal parts and subcategories 2. Mental organizing

  6. Mapping Strengths Works best • Organizes ideas • For people who like to visualize Weaknesses • Easy to use • doesn’t work for • some minds • Helps you see the organization • For spatial learners • Takes up a lot of paper • Shows relationships • Still have to understand relationships to take notes

  7. Mind mapping Key ideas Doesn’t work for everyone Weaknesses Graphically organized Strengths May get off track doodling Have to develop a system Shows ideas in clumps Visual Works best … For nonlinear thinkers

  8. Charting Strengths Weaknesses Best for… organized every class??? brief notes quick not all material good memory http://www.ehow.com/how_2208671_effective-notes-using-notetaking-systems.html

  9. Cornell note-taking system Actually an entire study system Organize notes Built-in system for studying Created and used at Cornell

  10. Divide the page into 2 parts, the left side about 2-3 inches • wide • The right side of the page is used for taking notes during class • The left side is used for cues, questions, or key words during or after class • Choose whatever note system works for the right side • Leave 2-3 inches at the bottom of the page

  11. This side will be used for recording key terms, vocab words, main ideas. This helps you remember the lecture and study notes quickly. Or questions. To use the system, begin taking notes in class. You may use any system that works for you for the actual notes. This style is called linear notes. You simply record most of what the teacher says. This is not the best system. It takes too much time, and you typically are trying to remember exact words rather than ideas. You would probably do better to learn one of the systems we discussed.

Remember to use this portion of the page for a summary. The knee joint is made up of four bones, four ligaments, and two menisci

  15. This side is now covered so the notes don’t show. Can you recall the note material by looking at the key words, cues, or questions to the left? Four bones of knee joint What are the 4 ligaments? 2 menisci??

  16. Most importantly… Find a note-taking system that works for you, then use it and perfect it. Use abbreviations and don’t try to record everything the teacher says.
