  15. The Field

  16. THE GAME • Scoring • Touchdown = 6 pts • Extra points: • 3 yds = 1 pt • 10 yds = 2 pts • If defense gains possession of the ball on the PAT, the play is over. • Mercy Rule: 1 min remaining 25 or more; Any time in second half when a team is up by 45 pts the game is over. • Teams play with 4 players but you can start and play with a minimum of 3

  17. THEGAME • Time • Two 15minute halves with a 3 minute half time. • Last one minute of second half will run on a stop-clock procedure. • 2 Timeouts per game • Overtime will not be used until the playoffs. The game will end in a tie if necessary during the regular season. • During playoffs, start from the 10 yard line with two downs. Each team gets possession (similar to college OT).

  18. Series of Downs • There are no kickoffs. Ball will be put in play from the five (5) yard line to begin a half or after a score. • A team will have three (3) downs to advance the ball to the zone line to gain. There is no punting, so teams must always go for it. • If a team turns it over on downs, the ball will go back to the defense’s own 5 yard line. • Exception: defense forces a turnover, keeps the ball where they were deflagged after gaining possession

  19. SCRIMMAGE LINE • Scrimmage Line • Offense must have 1 player set within one yard of the line prior to the snap (center counts) • The QB must be 2 yards behind the center and the snap must be 1 continuous motion • All offensive players must be within 15 yards of the ball momentarily prior to the snap

  20. PASSING • One (1) forward pass from behind the line of scrimmage MUST BE completed each play. • Unlimited backward laterals anywhere on the field • Must have one forward pass still! • All players are eligible receivers • Legal Catch • One foot in-bounds for complete pass • Simultaneous catch – awarded to offense

  21. RUNNING THE BALL • Location of the ball when de-flagged is where the ball will be spotted for the next play • One hand tag between shoulders and knees if the flag belts accidentally fall off • If the ball carrier fumbles the ball is dead where it contacts the ground • Avoid being De-Flagged • May spin or dive (into open space) • Can NOT hurdle players • Flag guarding: using hands, arms, or the ball to deny the opponent the opportunity to deflag

  22. RUSHING • Defense may rush the passer once the ball has been snapped, if they start behind the 5 yard puck • Rusher must go around any offensive blockers • Roughing the passer • Defense must avoid any contact with the passer! • If contact is made with the passer it is roughing the passer • Ball is part of the hand

  23. SCREEN BLOCKING • Screen Blocking ONLY! • Blockers must keep their arms to their side or behind their back • Any use of arms, elbows, legs, or body to initiate contact is ILLEGAL Contact

  24. Common Penalties • Flag Guarding- using hands, arms, or the ball to deny the opponent an opportunity to remove the flag belt. Includes: • Swinging hand or arm over the flag belt • Placing the ball in possession over the flag belt • Lowering shoulders in such a manner it places the arm over the belt • Any other acts besides spinning (with arms above belt) and various hip moves to prevent deflagging • 5 YARDS

  25. Common Penalties • Pass Interference- contact which interferes with a receiver’s ability to make a catch unless it is incidental. • Also interference if an eligible receiver is deflagged prior to touching a ball on a throw. • Offensive pass interference can be called any time after the snap • Defensive pass interference can only be called during the time of a pass attempt. • Offensive- 5 yards from previous spot • Defensive- 5 yards from previous • FACEGUARDING is pass interference!!!

  26. Common Penalties • Illegal Contact- players must screen block to prevent defenders from reaching their intended destination. Guidelines: • Blocker’s arms must be kept at his/her side, in front of his/her waist, or behind his/her back • Blocker may not initiate contact with defender • Penalty when contact occurs and there is an advantage gained. • 5 yard penalty, spot of foul or end of the run
