Vocabulary • Grievances: • wrongs, as perceived by the colonists that were committed by the King George III towards the colonists. Twenty-seven grievances are listed in the Declaration of Independence. • Quartering Act: • ordered the local governments of the American colonies to provide housing and provisions for British soldiers.
Grievances • No taxation without representation • If you tax me I want to have representation • King has absolute power • 2/3 vote • Colonist not allowed to speak out against the king • Ad:1 freedom of speech • Quartering Act Forced colonists to house troops • Ad:3 right not to house troops • Allowed homes to be searched without warrants • Ad:4 must have a warrant • No trial by jury of peers • Ad:7
Natural rights: basic rights that government cannot deny from the people. Life, liberty, happiness • Individual rights: Rights are an inherent part of a human being. Rights are yours at birth, given to you by nature or God, and permit you to act in your own self-interest with total control over your own life and property, so long as you do not infringe upon the same rights of others. Rights are not granted by the State. A legitimate government can only guarantee that the rights of all are equally protected.
