  1. PURE SUBSTANSES SIMPLE AND COMPOUNDS

  2. SUMMARY • TYPES OF SUBSTANCES • SIMPLE SUBSTANCES • EXAMPLES OF SIMPLE SUBSTANCES • GOLD • MERCURY • COMPOUND SUBSTANCES • EXAMPLES OF COMPOUND SUBSTANCES • SALT • WATER • VIDEOS • QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

  3. TYPES OF SUBSTANCES There are two types of substances • Simple substances: are those which are only composed of an atom. • Compound substances: are composed of two or more atoms. Oxygen Water

  4. SIMPLE SUBSTANCES A simple substance is one whose molecules are made up of only one type of atom. For example, oxygen and ozone are simple substances, because their molecules are formed only by oxygen atoms. Other examples are diamonds and graphite, which are simple because they are formed by atoms of a single class.

  5. EXAMPLES of simple substances

  6. SIMPLE SUBSTANCES GOLD In the case of gold, depending on its thickness, it presents various shades from yellow, yellowish green, blue or pink (when the layer is very thin). It is a pure substance which has a composition.

  7. Simple SUBSTANCES MERCURY • Mercury is a heavy metal. When its pure it is known as "elementary" or "metallic“. Mercury (also represented as Hg). It´s never found in its pure form, as liquid metal; It is more common in compounds and inorganic salts. From Hg many organic and inorganic mercury compounds can be formed.

  8. Compound SUBSTANCES • Compound substance: It is the substance that is made up of two or more atoms of different chemical elements. For example, the gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) are compound substances, its molecules are formed by atoms of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen.

  9. Examples of compound substances

  10. COMPOund SUBSTANCES SALT • Salt is called sodium chloride. It is a substance from nature, Basic for the correct functioning of the body, for the flavours and as a natural preservative. Salt also developes an important role in the industrial field as raw material of many manufacturing processes. In its natural state it is colourless or white and it`s made up of small cubes.

  11. COMPOUND SUBSTANCES WATER Water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, its formule is H2O, each water molecule contains two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. Water is colourless, odorless and tasteless. Water is a chemical compound present in large amounts in the Earth, in liquid, solid or gaseous state.
