  6. FAIR AND JUST CULTURE • What are the rules/expectations? • Does everyone know them? • How do we differentiate an individual with a problem vs a good person set-up to fail in the system? • Critical to have one set of rules and avoid work-arounds

Important • To understand the scope of the issues and all the implications, ramifications, potential unintended outcomes, and collateral damage and to create a climate that fosters trust • To encourage and be willing to report errors and incidents, near misses or “good catches” • To provide fair-minded treatment, create effective structures that help people reveal errors or deviations from approved and accepted practice and help the University learn

In a just culture… • Resist the urge to say “no harm, no foul” and treat a risky choice/decision/action as a precursor to a bad outcome • Prevention in a just culture - “is not” about expecting perfection - “is” about understanding limitations and working to improve both our choices and the system around us

Charge: advise the Chancellor and inform our academic community 1) monitor existing systems and policies and organization related to academics 2) review present and past academic outcomes and trends 3) seek out Best Practice information from our academic peers to guide our refinement of the UNC connection of academics and athletics** 4) provide input to new systems and policies to strengthen the UNC experience for our students participating in athletics UNC experience.**

Committee Member Contributions • Perspective as a faculty member at UNC; an understanding of the academic expectations and the mission of the University • “Content” expert on an assigned topic /issue • Perspective of the athletes and coaches from their assigned teams Allow us to review comprehensively and to reflect openly on information shared and directions chosen.

Topics to monitor, review, and strengthen: • Admissions – from recruiting through matriculation • Academics – majors/courses/progress toward degree/registrations • Advising and student success– student support programs – existing and needed • Student Athlete experience – surveys/focus groups/ other information gathering to base decisions on improving and strengthening the UNC experience for our students who participate in athletics

Topics to monitor, review, and strengthen: • Policies and Procedures – review of P&P from around the campus related to athletics and work on development of any new P&P needed to fortify existing systems or establish new ones** • Administration and Operations – personnel, hirings, responsibilities, funding, principles

  14. Conversations, Input, Discussions Connections – between many groups/ committees/ offices related to athletics Understanding – interrelationship of concerns and issues and successes Informed discussion – FAC process

  15. Latest COIA Report (March 2013)(Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics) • Increased faculty engagement in athletics governance • Potential NCAA deregulation to principle-based structure • Suggestions for a SAR (Senate Athletics Representative) and AIG (Academic Integrity Group)

  16. UNC – ahead of the proposal • FAC – serves as a connection with Faculty Council (SAR component – Chair of FAC) • FAC members assigned specific area to monitor and review in depth for review by the full committee (AIG component) • Full faculty engagement as NCAA “evolves” to insure our campus remains true to its identified philosophy regarding athletics

  17. Wrap it up – Where are we now? Pull it together – Are there gaps in where we are and where we want to be? Move it forward –What are the next steps for clearly establishing and communicating our University philosophy for the bonding of athletics and academics in sync with our mission and values?
