  1. Cinematography test. • What does AMPS stand for? • When might a close-up shot be used? • What is a flashback and why is it used? • What is the purpose of the establishing shot? • What is the difference between a panning shot and a tracking shot? • What is the shot-reverse-shot, and what is its purpose? • What meaning does a POV shot create? • What is meant by Zoom / reverse zoom? • What sort of camera would create a shaky effect? • What is the difference between a two shot and a three shot?

  2. Aims1. To further our understanding of cinematography.

  3. Lets make a film… • TASK – In order to understand the way that audience meaning is created you are now going to create your own scene using still photographs only. • Pay particular attention to the shots you use and the meaning that you want to create.

  4. Cinematography writing Practice • Task: Watch the clip. • Make notes on the Cinematography only. Identify the angles, movements, positions and shots and make notes on the intended audience meaning.

  5. Describing a technique. • Once you have identified the technical aspect the next and more important step is to analyse its meaning for audiences. • However this isn’t always easy to put into words. You really have to think adjectively! • E.g.: ‘the sequence where handheld camera movements are used imply that the situation is chaotic and that the main character John is in a state of confusion’. • What are the describing words in this sentence. • Try to find other ways of saying “creates tension”!

  6. Words to connect technique to audience • This shot suggests….. • Implies • Shows • Can you think of any others? List some… • Micro analysis task: • Now using your Minority Report sheets focus on one particular cinematography aspect and aim to write a paragraph. • You have 2 minutes…. • …..lets do it again! • H/W: How does the cinematography in the opening to Minority Report create meaning for the audience?

  7. Cinematography • Photography – the art of capturing a still image • Cinematography - The art of capturing a moving image • Director Of Photography (DOP) or Cinematographer • 4 main components: • Angles • Movement • Positions • Shots • Task: Brainstorm examples can you think of for each?
