With this being said… • What do you do if you have one or more students in your classroom who do not speak English? • Cultural differences can mean different rules for classroom behavior • Students become overly dependent on teacher • Persistent use of first-language

  3. Instructional Strategy using Flashcards Flashcards are a very effective instructional strategy and can be used to help ESL students. This allows students to comprehend the definition of English words by looking at images. Flashcards are a magnificent learning and teaching tool when introducing new vocabulary. They can also be used around the classroom to reference to supplies in the classroom.

Group Learning • Why use cooperative learning? • -research shows that students who work in cooperative groups do better on tests (especially reasoning and critical thinking skills • -minority students expressed a greater preference for learning in groups • -effective cooperative learning classes focused on group goals and individual accountability • - heterogeneous groups • Motivation/LifeSkills • -encourages participation in learning process • - develop social relationships through learning together • -builds teamwork essential in modern society/workplaces

Group Activity • Group activity "Water wheel" • Objective: using the materials given, create a standing *waterwheel* that will spin on its own when blown at. • whats a waterwheel?? • groups of 5-6 • 5mins brainstorm (no touching materials!) • 15mins working time • teamwork=20 • explanation=15 • spin=30 • continue spinning=10
