Commedia Dell’ Arte. By: Dana Manradgh. Literary Period/Movement. Commedia Dell’ Arte began in Italy in the 16 th and 17 th century. The performers traveled in Troupes to perform. The three most famous Troupes were Gelosi, Confidenti,and Fedeli.

Literary Period/Movement • Commedia Dell’ Arte began in Italy in the 16th and 17th century. • The performers traveled in Troupes to perform. • The three most famous Troupes were Gelosi, Confidenti,and Fedeli. • The Troupes performed on temporary stages usually in streets.
Literary period continued.. • The zanni or servant was the most important character in the play. -Arlecchino or Harlequin was the most famous servant. • The masks the characters wore represented the emotion the character was felling at the time.
Literary period continues.. • The were several different dialects in Italy at this period. • The audience in most cases did not understand what the performer was saying. • Still, the audience did not care.
Social Elements • “Commedia Dell’Arte appealed to the masses, without regard for language, nationality, or social status” (Rudlin). • “Performances took place on temporary stages, mostly on city streets, but occasionally even in court venues” (Filippo).
Religious elements • Art during this period of time was suppose to be dedicated to the church. • At the time people should have belonged to the Church Of God.
Religious elements continued • Luther wrote the 95 Theses in 1517 which changed peoples view on religion in Italy. • The 95 Theses lead to Reformation in Italy
Poltitical Elements • Several problems were going on in Italy in the Commedia Dell’ Arte era. • “Italian theatre historians, such as Roberto Tessari and Ferdinando Taviani, believe commedia developed as a response to the political and economic crisis of the 16th century and, as a consequence, became the first entirely professional form of theatre” (Delpiano).
Political elements Continued • Commedia Dell’ Arte was a way for the community (including high ranking people) to get away from the stress. • The Commedia Dell’ Arte plays usually poked fun at political problems by delivering political statements.
Artistic Elements • The most known artistic element of Commedia Dell’ Arte were the masks. • The masks portrayed the feelings of the performer. • The performers could be told apart by the nose on the masks.
Artistic Elements Continued • Singing and dancing were also central themes of Commedia Dell’ Arte • At the end of a performance the audience usually joined in song with the performers.
Influence on Art • The impact of Commedia Dell'Arte on European drama can be seen in French pantomime and the English harlequinade. • Also signs of Commedia Dell’ Arte can be seen in shows such as “The Simpson's”
Most famous Characters Arlecchino • Most famous servant • He tries to trick his masters, but often fails. • He is very quick, acrobatic, and limber .
Most famous characters continued Pantalone • Pantalone is obsessed with money. • He is very high on the social ladder in town. • He lusts for women at all times.
Most Famous Characters Continued Il Dottore • Very high on the social ladder • Is a Doctor, but usually has no idea what he is talking about. • Hates to stop talking although he has a lisp.
Most famous characters continued.. The Lovers • High status in the town • Sons and daughters of parents who are also high on the social ladder • Most famous lover is Pantalone daughter • Status is slightly lowered because of extreme infatuation.
Most famous characters continues Il Capitano • Extremely arrogant with a huge ego • Pretends he is a captain because he owns the uniform • Behind his front of courage he is actually a coward.
Interesting facts • Bart Simpson is the modern version of Arlecchino • Pantalone is the old time version of Mr. Burns from “The Simpson's”
Interesting facts continued.. • Men had to play female roles • Actors influenced Theatre in Spain, Holland, Germany, Austria, and especially France.
