Assessing and Grading in PE • Purpose of assessment is to determine whether students have reached the standards/goals you set out for them. (alignment) • Did you accomplish what you set out to accomplish with your students? • You must tell/show students what you expect from them and how you will assess learning! • Assessments can take place periodically (formative) in a unit; at the conclusion (summative); or while students are actually practicing (embedded) • Alternative Assessments • -Observations, open-ended test questions, student logs, journals, reports, projects, etc • -Resembles “real-life” situations
Assessing and Grading in PE • Assessment Tools -Observations -Tests -Logs and Journals -Role playing -Reports -Projects • Grading requires the selection and display of a final symbol to communicate the results of assessment • Never give grades based on variables other than the standards! -Attendance, tardiness, showering, dressing out!

Blogging • Online diaries with articles, writings, photos, Web links or other entries made by the blogs' creators, or "bloggers." • Allow readers to leave their own comments or links to topics. • Interactive nature allows bloggers to refer to each other's blogs, creating so-called "blogospheres" -- groups of blogs centered around specific themes, topics or interests.
Blogging Blogs are: • Highly motivating to students • Excellent opportunities for students to read and write. • Effective forums for collaboration and discussion. • Powerful tools to enable scaffolded learning or mentoring to occur. Discussions • A class blog opens the opportunity for students to discuss topics outside of the classroom. • Every person has an equal opportunity to share their thoughts • Teachers can also bring together a group of knowledgeable individuals for a given unit of study for students to network and conference with on a blog.
