  7. Language work Present perfect vs past simple We use the present perfect or the past simple when we write a biography. We use the past simple when we write or talk about people who are not alive. We use the present perfect or the past simple when we write or talk about people who are alive. The present perfect is used to describe what people have achieved up to the present moment. The past simple is used when we describe things that happened at a definite time in the past.
