Feb. - April: Review and re-write (with Teddy Diggs, Publisher/Editor of EDUCAUSE Review) May/June: Article published in EDUCAUSE Review

  10. 2010 Survey • Four areas: • Issues that are critical for strategic success • Issues that are expected to become more significant • Issues that demand greatest amount of IT leader’s time • Issues that consume most financial & human resources • Select 5 most important issues • 27 issues on the list • Sent to 1,909 EDUCAUSE primary member reps • 424 completed the survey (22%)

  18. Top 10 issue for 9 of last 11 years • Two times when important: • Plenty of money • Need to cut budgets • Budget crisis really sunk in this past year

  19. Economic concerns = less investment • The “cloud” = outsourced infrastructure • Still need to consider • “the network” = wired + wireless + cellular • Smartphones, PDAs • Green computing

  20. “Change Management” in 2008 and earlier • Appearance coincides with economic downturn • Evolving needs (requirements) of stakeholders • Gmail, smartphones, iPad • Flexibility, functionality, convenience • “Their” efficiencies = “our” agility, adaptability, responsiveness

Current challenges • Require increased stewardship of all resources (financial and human) • Build and maintain strategic partnerships (internal and external) • Simple or temporary cuts/changes no longer sufficient • “Fluff” is gone • Re-visioning of services and resource realignment • Clearly connect IT to campus mission and goals

  22. Fairly stable operation • Yet still costly and time consuming • New financial realities = new questions • Streamlined? • Core features vs. “bolted on” additions? • Can components be outsourced, or SaaS?

  23. Always a top-10 issue • In the past due to underfunding • Future increases unlikely • Rather than bemoan lack of funding… • Seize “opportunity” for strategic planning • Prioritizing with stakeholders within allocated budget • Lemons to lemonade
