  2. Islam • A monotheistic religion; belief in one god. • Islam started in the Middle East in the ArabianPeninsula in 622 A.D. • Islam means submission , obedience, or peace

  3. Muslim • Muslim, one who believes, a follower of Islam • Muslims worship the same one God of Christians and Jews • ALLAH is the Arabic word for God

  4. Islam • Muhammad—Prophet • Revelation ---a divine message from god • Archangel Gabriel—messenger who revealed Allah’s divine message to Muhammad

  6. Muhammad the Prophet • Muhammad was born in Mecca 570 A.D. • Mecca – people practiced a polytheistic religion, many gods and goddesses. • Kaaba—a temple built by Abraham and Ishmael. The Kaaba held the idols of many gods and goddesses.

  8. Muhammad the Prophet • Muhammad revealed the message to the citizens of Mecca. • Citizens of Mecca would not give up their many gods and goddesses. • Muhammad travelled to Medina in 622 A.D. known as Hegira. • Muhammad returns to Mecca with an army and takes control of Mecca.

  12. How did the religion of Islam change the culture and economy of Mecca? Muhammad conquered the city of Mecca and made it a holy city of Islam. Polytheistic religious beliefs were replaced with a monotheistic religion, Islam. The Kaaba, which once housed the statues of many gods and goddesses, was dedicated as a temple to Allah.
