Resource: Skill One Level 2 Award OCR Level 2 Award in Thinking and Reasoning Skills J930 This resource is designed to accompany the OCR pilot in Thinking and Reasoning Skills Level 2 Award for teaching from September 2009. This resource supports the teaching of Skill One: Understanding an Argument. This qualification is only available to registered centres that are part of the pilot.   2. It is cold in winter. Penguins don’t like the cold. Therefore Penguins don’t like winter.

  3. Penguins are stupid creatures. They look ridiculous and they smell. Why anyone would want to watch programmes on TV about penguins is a complete mystery to me. It makes no sense at all.

  4. Penguins can swim but they cannot fly. They live in the southern hemisphere. They feed on krill, fish and squid caught while swimming under water. They are superbly adapted to life in cold climates. Children love them.

  5. The weather is sunny in Spain. It is raining here. I hate the rain and like most people I love the sun. So I should go to Spain.

  6. Spain is all people ever talk about these days. But the truth is it is too hot, the food is awful and it is full of tourists. Anyone who wants to go there more than once must be mad!

  7. Spain has a long Mediterranean coastline. It is popular with tourists. The weather is generally hot and dry. Its most famous wine is called Rioja.

  8. Dancing is an enjoyable way to burn calories. I don’t like most forms of exercise. I need to lose weight. So I should take up dancing.

  9. Dancing is a waste of time. It is pointless and stupid. It is not cool. People who like dancing need to get a life. I would rather be boiled alive in oil that watch dancing on TV!

  10. Dance comes in many forms. In England there is a long tradition of Morris dancing. Morris dancing is not popular with young people anymore. They prefer break dancing. Older people still enjoy watching dance on TV.

  11. Young people struggle waking up in the morning. So schools should start later.

  12. Young people are just lazy. They lie in bed all day doing nothing but watching TV and playing computer games. They are nothing but useless parasites.

  13. The school leaving age used to be fourteen. Then it was raised to sixteen in the 1970s. It is going to be raised again to eighteen. In some countries this is already the school leaving age.

  14. Crisps have a lot of salt in them. Too much salt is bad for you. Therefore you should cut down on the amount of crisps you eat.

  15. Interfering busy bodies are always telling us what to eat and what not to eat, how much exercise to take and how to live our lives. I am sick of it. Why can’t they just leave us alone?

  16. Food is what animals eat to stay alive. Typically food contains protein, carbohydrate and vitamins. Humans are unique among animals in cooking their food. Nowadays chefs have a celebrity status equal to that of footballers and musicians.
