  2. Hypotheses • Hypothesis #1: • Younger generations use social media to connect with others and entertainment. Older generations either do not use social media or use social media to stay in contact with younger generations. • Hypothesis #2: • Younger generations feel that cellular devices are necessary for day-to-day functioning and entertainment. Older generations feel that cellular devices are necessary to communicate with others (i.e. make phone calls and/or text).

  3. Creating the Survey • My 14 question survey was created using Google Docs’ survey form template. I loved the user friendly features of the template and also the ability to personalize the survey.

  4. Administering the Survey • I administered my survey via several different outlets • Facebook • Facebook is the only social media network that I currently belong to. Since the majority of my close friends are on Facebook I thought this would be a great way to get instant feedback. • Email • Part of my hypothesis is that older generations do not use social media, so I sent emails out to people who are not part of my social networking circles

Summary of Survey Respondents • 23 people responded to my survey within the first 24 hours. • I discarded two people’s responses because the data recorded by Google docs contained dates for each numerical response • Information from 21 people was used to test my hypotheses. • 14 younger generation (ages 11-40) • 7 older generation (ages 41+)

Hypothesis #1: Summary • Younger generation = 11- 40 • 100% belong to a social media network • Majority joined a social media network to connect with old friends • Majority strongly agree that they depend on social media to stay connected with others • Majority strongly agree that they depend on social media to keep in touch with others • Majority disagree that social media is primarily for younger generations • Older generation = 41+ • 57% belong to a social media network • Majority joined a social network to connect with family • Do not overwhelmingly depend on social media to stay connected with others • Equal distribution: Agree, Neutral, and Strongly disagree • Do not overwhelmingly depend on social media to keep in touch with others • Equal distribution: Strongly agree, Neutral, and Strongly disagree • Do not overwhelmingly agree that social media is primarily for younger generations • Equal distribution: Neutral and Disagree

Hypothesis #2: Summary • Younger Generation = 11-40 • 92% own cellular devices; of that 69% own smart phones • Majority strongly agree that they depend on their cellular devices on a daily basis • Majority do not play games on their cellular devices • No majority attested that a cellular device’s main function is to make phone calls • 28.5%: Strongly agree, Agree, and Disagree equally • Majority use their cellular devices for texting purposes • Older Generation = 41+ • 85% own cellular devices; of that 66% own smart phones • Majority strongly agree that they depend on their cellular devices on a daily basis • Majority do not play games on their cellular devices • Majority agree that a cellular device’s main function is to make phone calls • Majority use their cellular devices for phone calls and checking e-mails equally

Conclusion • Hypothesis #1: • Based on the data gathered, I believe that my initial hypothesis was false. • Younger generations primarily use social media to connect with old friends, and only one person listed entertainment purposes as a reason they joined. • The majority of older generation respondents do belong to a social media network and listed connecting with family as the main reason why. • Older generation appears to use social media as a source of entertainment more so than younger generations.

Conclusion • Hypothesis #2: • Based on the data gathered, I believe that my initial hypothesis was mostly true. • The majority of younger generation respondents strongly agreed that they depend on their cellular devices on a daily basis, but the majority do not play games on their cellular devices. • The majority of older generation respondents agreed that a cellular device’s main function is to make phone calls. That was also reflected in how they use their cellular devices on a daily basis, which was to make phone calls and check e-mails (communication).

  25. Reflection: Changes to be Made • My hypotheses are broad and lengthy. I should have narrowed them down to one topic and one parameter within each topic. • I probably would have liked to hand out paper copies of the survey instead of completing the survey online. The reason for this being, I know several people who do not have access to the internet outside of their workplace. Also, by administering the survey via Facebook, I was already skewing the results of my first hypothesis. • I would have included more demographic questions in my survey, such as gender and ethnicity. • Even though I had a proofreader, I found that several of my questions could be misleading. In the future, I would make sure that each question is neutral.
