  1. Where Did the Puritans Come From? Or, “Hey somebody clean up this mess and tell me what God wants before everyone is killed and there’s no one left to pray!”

  2. Fall of the Roman Empire

  3. Result… The Protestant Reformation

  4. Martin Luther (More on me later.)

  5. John Calvin (More on me later.)

  6. Meanwhile, Back IN ENGLAND

  7. England was Catholic until… • King Henry VIII wanted a divorce. • He created the Church of England, made himself leader and gave himself the divorce.

  8. Henry was replaced by Bloody Mary • She restores Catholicism. Now it is a crime not to be Catholic. • This causes confusion! • Puritans and their values begin here!!!

  9. Mary is replaced by her half sister Elizabeth I • She is Protestant. • She restores the Church of England but doesn’t want to reform it or deal harshly with Catholics. • CONFUSION!!!

  10. The next king, James I is no better. • He makes no reforms, but gets tired of the constant complaining of the Puritans. • He allows them to leave England if they want and some do.

  11. Charles I Represses the Puritans. • He gets tired of the complaining and persecutes them. • This is when many of them leave and come to colonize North America.

  12. Reform Movements!!! • Across Europe religious reform movements grew. • The Puritans are one of them. Their ideas evolved from the ideas of John Calvin. But they take the ideas farther.

  13. Puritans Want Change!!! • They want one, clearly defined, organized religion. • They want to purify the Anglican (English) church, removing all of the Catholic impurities. • They want clears rules about how they should live.

  14. The Puritans in America Puritans came to the New World by working for companies that had the right to create colonies.

  15. They were allowed to create their own rules so long as they worked and became profitable.

  16. The Puritan Ethic • Read the Puritan Ethic sheet.

  17. Early American Colonies • Jamestown 1607- Essentially a trading settlement with no specific religious design or purpose., • Plymouth 1620 & Massachusetts Bay 1630- Founded by Puritans. They will dominate the regions politics for the next 100 years.

  18. The Puritan Covenant with God COVENANT: An agreement, usually formal, between Two or more people. Usually to do or not do something specific. • To establish a holy society • Based upon hard work, duty, honesty and moderation in dress and drink • Waged war against the flesh and the Devil (See how that fits well with making a profit for the companies?)

  19. Key Puritan Beliefs (influenced by John Calvin ) • Absolute Sovereignty of God • Biblical Authority • Providence • Plainness • The Natural Depravity of Man • Predestination • God knows your fate from the day you are born. • Life is for you to discover whether you are saved or damned. (Wealth and success) • Successful people have earned God’s Favor, Visible Saints

  20. The Puritan Commonwealth • The community worked together for common good • The Congregation is the basic unit • Congregations established towns. • Town meetings made laws to govern (all) aspects of life. • Ministers delivered sermons providing instruction in “the New England Way”

  21. Puritan Education • Education maintained the Puritan Way. • Everyone must learn to read in order to read the bible. • Harvard College was founded in 1636 to train ministers.

  22. The Puritans Created Institutions to… • Maintain their way of life. • Teach their values.

  23. VALUES LAWS INSTITUTIONS

  24. Here’s your assignment!!! Assignment A: • Choose two institutions in the United States other than schools. • Describe three of the values that each of them uphold.

  25. Or Assignment B: • Choose two of the Dominant American Values. • Name 3 institutions that support them and some of the ways that they do it.

  26. New Changed VALUES VALUES New, Changed LAWS LAWS New Changed INSTITUTIONS INSTITUTIONS

  27. What Happened to the Puritan Dream? Who changed it? What parts of it remain today? What parts died?

  28. Over time people develop differing values, and develop a new dream. How do your dreams differ from those of your parents? What things your brothers and sisters want that are different from what you want? What do the differences in values do to your relationships? What forces are behind people “growing apart.”

  29. The same is true of the Puritans. Roger Williams ANNE HUTCHINSON

  30. Roger Williams • Thought that colonists should pay Indians for the lands that they took from them. • Thought people should be free to worship as they pleased. • The church should not regulate your relationship with God.

  31. As a result… • He was charged with heresy and was to be sent back to England. Why? • He fled to Providence (name?) R.I. And created a society that guaranteed separation of church and state and religious freedom.

  32. Anne Hutchinson • She believed that people could interpret the bible themselves without the help of ministers. • Was viewed as a real threat to Puritan values. • Was punished for her beliefs and then fled to Rhode Island.

  33. But if the Puritans were chosen by God, how do the new societies justify their existence? ?

  34. They too adopt a… Providential History!!!

  35. Adopting Providential Histories is a key part of many new religions United States

  36. The real end of the Puritans comes as a result of many religious writings that were published in the colonies. Regional differences grew, many different religious groups were established. In the Early 1700’s religious tolerance and freedom become the norm and eventually the law.
