  1. The Eight Parts of Speech

  2. Noun-the name of a person, place, or thing. Examples: The pilot pulled the plane out of the nose dive. Last summer Mark went to a dude ranch for two weeks.

  3. Pronoun—a word that takes the place of one or more nouns. Examples: Ellen carried her umbrella to school. Walter said, “I like mashed potatoes best.” Steve asked Anita to go to the dance with him.

  4. Verb—tells what the subject is doing or tells about the subject. Examples: The United States issued the first patent in 1790. I started a savings account last month. Evenings in the fall are quite cool.

  5. Adjective—a word that modifies a noun or pronoun. Examples: The old car needs to be painted. These boots belong to Stacy. Thirty people attended the meeting.

  6. Adverb—a word that modifies a verb, and adjective, or another adverb. Examples: The old train slowly chugged forward. The huge watchdog growled fiercely and angrily. I haven’t seen that movie yet.

  7. Preposition– a word that shows the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and another word in the sentence. Examples: The bushes behind the house need trimming. The plane flew above the storm clouds. Carl sat ______ Marcy at the game.

  8. Conjunction- connects words or groups of words. Examples: Her ring and bracelet were lost. She or he will be elected. Greg came to the party.

  9. Interjection—a word that expresses strong feeling or emotion. Examples: What! Are you sure? Wow! That sounds great. Great! We finished on time.
