  2. PREPOSITION A word that shows the relationship between its object and another word in the sentence. NOUN adj. prep.

  3. COMMONLY USED PREPOSITIONS

  4. The first word in a prepositional phrase is the preposition (pre- position). The last word is the object. It is usually a noun or pronoun. Each of the sentences below have two prepositions and prepositional phrases. Jack went to Homecoming with Jill. Jack went to Homecoming with her.

  5. Jack went to Homecomingwith Jill. Jack went to Homecomingwith her. Now label the sentences with parts of speech. What is left?

  6. Prepositions show relationships of time. (before, during, after) Our cafeteria serves breakfast before school.

  7. Prepositions show relationships of space. (in, on, beside, around) Jaime cannot sit beside her friend.

  8. Prepositions show relationships of direction. (to, from, toward) James walked slowly to the library.

  9. Find prepositional phrases in the following sentences. Each sentences has three. • A group of Peacekeepers marches us through the front door of the Justice Building. • Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. • The baker sits awkwardly on the edge of one of the plush chairs.

  13. Activity: Looking at your list of common prepositions, make a list sorted by time, direction, and space. Example: time direction space during toward into and more…
