  2. SPEAKING • Take comfort in the fact that most people are anxious about public speaking • It is also a highly valued skill • We fear public speaking because we feel “self-conscious” • You have already examined this issue using a Try It.

  3. What Do You Do During A Debate? • Present a position on an issue/question • Present your reasons for supporting that position • Defend your position with evidence • Counter, rebut the position & evidence of your opponent • Restate & confirm your position

  4. The PREP formula is very useful for debate • The PREPing formula for Impromptu Speaking • Point of View: Initially provide your point of view or stand on the issue • Reasons: Provide chief reasons why you believe your point of view is correct • Evidence/Examples: Give specific evidence to support your point of view • Point of View: Reinforce your point of view by simply restating it

  5. Practice PERP • In small groups- write out a PREP in response to the following question: • Should Cal State San Marcos eliminate the “All University Writing Requirement?” (The mandate that every course at the University must have a writing component of at least 2,500 words; approximately 10 pages for every course)

Practice PREP • In small groups- write out a PREP in response to the following question: • National statistics show that young adults (college age) have a very low rate of participating in the voting process. Does our campus community have a responsibility to try and increase voter participation among students?

  7. GEL To Do List • In small groups- write out a PREP in response to your topic for debate.
