  4. 3. Read the graduated cylinder. The cylinder is in mL.

  5. 8/21 Class Business • $5.00 Class Fee is due ASAP • AP Biology Binder due ASAP. First binder check is coming soon (hint, hint) • Unit 1 exam is next MONDAY • 2nd Period has the highest attendance at parent night. WHOOT, WHOOT! You earn a treat!

  6. 8/21 Agenda • Daily Catalyst • Class Business • Grade metric homework • Chi-Squared Equation • Distribution of M & M’s partner work • Exit Ticket #2 on math in Bio • Mentos lab design • Homework: Chi-Square equation practice

  7. Metric System Grading • Directions: Using the provided red pen, place a +1 or +0 next to the questions that are correct or incorrect. • This assignment is worth 25 points! Yes, that is right, you get an easy point for including your name! • Noise: 0 (we are raising hands to answer) • Time: 6 minutes

  8. Metric Conversion Challenge Write the correct abbreviation for each metric unit. 1) Kilogram _ 4) Milliliter __ 7) Kilometer _ 2) Meter _ 5) Millimeter _ 8) Centimeter _ 3) Gram ____ 6) Liter _ 9) Milligram _ Try these conversions, using the ladder method. 10) 2000 mg = ___ g 15) 5 L = ___ mL 20) 16 cm = ___ mm 11) 104 km = ___ m 16) 198 g = ___ kg 21) 2500 m = __ km 12) 480 cm = _ m 17) 75 mL = __ L 22) 65 g = __ mg 13) 5.6 kg = __ g 18) 50 cm = ___ m 23) 6.3 cm = ___ mm 14) 8 mm = cm 19) 5.6 m = __ cm 24) 120 mg = __ g

  9. Why is math in science important?

  10. Chi- Squared Equation • You will be given guided notes and your job is to be an engaged listener and follow along with the video clip.

  11. Distribution of M & M’s • Just liked the video said, the best way to learn Chi-squared, is to practice it! • What better way to learn than with M & M’s! • With a partner, complete the M & M ws. When you have finished, the ws, THEN you may eat the M & M’s • Remember, I am looking for AP quality when you turn this in.

  12. Exit Ticket #2 • 1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using the metric system of measurements? • 2. Why is it important for all scientists to use a standard system of measures rather than the system that may be most popular in their home country or region? • 3. Convert 13 grams into milligrams. • 4. Complete the Chi-Squared equation:

  13. 1. An advantage is that all countries use the metric system so they can easily communicate with one another. Also, the metric system relies on the base 10 unit system which is easier to remember in conversions. A disadvantage is the US does not the metric system so must rely on converting between the metric and standard systems. • 2. It is important that all scientists use the measurements and units so when scientists share their findings with others, everyone around the word will understand the data and the chance of miscommunication and misinterpretation will be minimized.

  14. 3. Convert 13 grams into milligrams.4. Complete the Chi-Squared equation: Out of 8 points total!

  15. Mentos Lab • Tomorrow, you will conduct a lab using Mentos and soda. As a lab group, you will design an experiment that tests the Mentos and soda experiment. This is your time to show me you know how to design a lab! • Before you leave, tell Mrs. Ireland the materials you will need for your lab.

  16. Possible ideas: • Test different soda • Test crushed vs whole Mentos • Test number of Mentos • Test mint vs flavored Mentos • ETC!!

  17. Homework • Complete the Chi-squared homework. This is due at the beginning of class tomorrow in the basket! • Chi-Squared will be on the Unit 1 exam. • Let’s get ready to ace the exam!
