This report gives an account in the following areas: • National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) • Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI) • KhaRiGude Mass Literacy Campaign • Workbooks Project for Grades 1 to 9 and Grade 12 • Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) • Internships and Learnerships in the DBE • Universal access to Grade R • Examinations • DBE Supply Chain

  6. Addressing Poverty Background of National School Nutrition Programme • NSNP a key government programme to enhance learning capacity and promote attention & retention of learners • Household poverty General Household survey (GHS) – high levels of poverty despite a decrease (23.9% in 2010 to 23.1% in 2013) – NSNP seeks to address poverty (short term hunger); • Beneficiaries (increasing trend) No-fee schools > high expectations to extend NSNP in these schools > pressure on the budget

  7. Engagement of Cooperatives in NSNP • 580 LWCs currently supplying food to schools using both the centralized and decentralized model of procurement. • Five provinces are utilising LWCs (FS, KZN, LP, MP, NC) • Compared to the number of schools serviced, there is room for expansion in the engagement of SMEs and LWCs
