  1. Marco Polo

  2. Who was he....? • Marco Polo was a merchant from Venice. • He was born in the year 1254 in a place in Italy known as the Venetian Republic which was famous for its merchant trading. He died there in 1324.

  3. Marco Polo travelled to Asia in 1271(at 17 years of age) making him one of the first people to go to this unknown area of the world. • He travelled the area with his merchant father and uncle for 24 years! • Along the way they saw many strange and wonderful things.

  4. If he wasn’t first there, why is he a famous explorer? • Upon the trio’s return to Venice they were arrested by the invading army from Genoa. • Marco Polo was imprisoned for being Venetian! • While he was in gaol Marco Polo told his tales of exploration to his cell mate.

  5. If he wasn’t first there, why is he a famous explorer? Cont. • Marco Polo told his cell mate to write down these stories of adventure for him. What resulted was the journal of Marco Polo’s journey. • It is THIS that made Marco Polo famous for his travels to Asia!

  6. Life after gaol • The book became very popular due to its narrative style. • As there were no printers then, all copies of the book had to be hand written! This meant that there became many different versions of Marco Polo’s travels as some scribes added their own ‘details’ to the journal.

  7. Marco Polo a Hero? • Marco Polo is celebrated as famous explorer. • Essentially though, he was a trader collecting goods that he could sell in Venice. • On his travels he and his father and uncle became ambassadors for the Kublai Khan (powerful leader in Asia) and the Pope. • Because of the variations in his story, some people do not even believe that Marco Polo did all the fantastic things written about in his journal (what do you think?)

  8. His voyage • The reason for Marco Polo’s journey to China was for trade. He was after things like spices and silks. • Marco Polo is actually famous for introducing spaghetti into Italy!

  9. His Voyage As you can see, Marco Polo travelled both over land and sea in his epic 24 year journey. On land he used on foot and used mainly horses to help him, but also travelled by camel.

  10. His legacy Marco Polo was not the first person to explore Asia he is not famous because he discovered it. Why he is famous for his journey is because he wrote about it! Because of this he is often referred to as ‘The Greatest Overland Explorer’. The book that described his journey to China (Il Milioneaka The Travels of Marco Polo) was the way that many people in the Middle Ages learnt of Asia.
