  2. Content Overview of Cal / Val activities at MUMM Description of models NRT validation Next steps

  3. Model description • Physics: COHERENS 3-D hydrodynamic model (V1, V2) • Developed in the nineties (MAST projects; Dr.P Luyten et al.) • Verified/validated • Long list of users • Biology: MIRO (Dr. Lancelot et al.) • 32 state variables • 28 processes linking the state variables • Phytoplankton , Zooplankton, microbial loop and benthic diagenesis. • Hindcast run ’93-’06: validation against in situ and remote sensing data using various metrics (see e.g., Lacroix et al., 2007, JMS 64)

  4. Hydrodynamics: operational • 2D barotropic model for NWS (~6km) • 3D baroclinic model for the North Sea (~6km) • 3D baroclinic model for the BCS (~0.750 m)

  15. NRT validation: DIN

  16. NRT validation: PO4

  17. Summary and next steps • Procedures for NRT validation do exist: • Some are fully automatic • Others are still in pre-operational mode • For water level and SST (SSS?), we have enough data for some statistical computation. • For biochemistry, remote sensing data are sparse. Comparison with climatology is possible at some stations • For transports, NRT comparison between models is feasible. • Verification/validation of the MIRO&CO (pre-oper): • more diagnostics, automatization of procedures, … • Must be done in compliance with Met. Office products.

  18. Cal / Val practical plan • Proposal (to be discussed today) • April: model outputs and data available • End of June: implementation of metrics • End of September: checking of the metrics implementation • End of October: report and metrics code available
