  2. General Information • Scientific name: Streptococcus pyogenes. • They are gram-positive • Metabolism: anaerobic, heterotrophs • Produces a pyrogenic exotoxin • Does not form endospores (no special adaptations) • Classification: Streptococcus (round and in a chain) • Habitat: blood

  3. Impact • Streptococcus Pyogenes causes Scarlet fever. This illness mostly effects children. Symptoms include fever and a bright red rash. It can be treated with antibiotics.

  4. Wow Facts • More than 10 million infections are caused by group A Streptococcus each year. • Before the development of antibiotics, Scarlet Fever was the leading cause of death in children. • Scarlet Fever occur mostly in children 4-8 years old.
