The TDX service, initiated in 1999, unifies electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) from 14 academic institutions in Catalonia, including 11 universities and the national library. With a university community of 172,000 students and 6,000 staff, TDX promotes scholarly communication and digital preservation within an international framework. By sharing resources and procedures among participant universities, TDX aims to strengthen the role of libraries while increasing access to academic research. Future goals include expanding TDX to encompass all Catalan universities and incorporating historical theses.

ETD: doing it together Lluís M. Anglada Consortium of Academic Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC) ETD 2003 Berlin, May 22nd, 2003
Current situation • TDX is a service that gathers ETDs from Catalan universities • TDX is an organization involving 14 participant institutions • 11 universities • 2 consortia (supercomputing and libraries) • 1 ‘national’ library
Catalonia • Autonomous region of Spain, • 6,000,000 inhabitants, • Own language (Catalan), • University system of 8 public universities and 3 private ones, • University community of 172.000 students, 13.000 teaching staff and 6.000 administr. staff • National Library (Biblioteca de Catalunya).
TDX: evolution • 1999: reports and early works, NDLTD membership • 2000 Oct.: server set up • 2001 Feb.: first ETD • 2002 Feb.: • 8 universities • 429 ETDs • 2003 May: • 11 universities • Nearly 1.000 ETDs

TDX: agents’ roles • Universities • Collect and edit ETDs • CESCA (supercomputing center) • Server and software maintenance • CBUC (library consortium) • Coordination and promotion • Biblioteca de Catalunya (national library) • Preservation issues
TDX: initial objectives • Putting content on the Internet • Strengthening libraries’ role in scholarly communication processes • Doing it inside an international project (NDLTD)
TDX: first steps • 1999: State-of-the-art report • 2000: • Legal report • Project and governmental funding • Agreement universities-CESCA-CBUC • Preparing the software: common interface
2000: main problems • Disagreement at universities between different departments • Lack of information for the main players: the authors • Lots of “good” reasons to change not the current status quo
Solutions: doing it together • Complementariness • ‘Globalitzation’ • Promotion • Emulation
Complementariness • Common TDX Intranet built from participant universities’ information • In order to: • Share procedures • Share forms • Share contracts • Share promotion tools • Dispel uncertainties
‘Globalization’ • ETDs as one more aspect about content digitization • Biblioteca Digital de Catalunya (Digital Library of Catalonia) • Union catalogue • Databases, e-journals, e-books • e-TOC’s database • TDX • ...
Some results • requested theses, by university of origin • submited/requested • submited theses, by subject • Access by country
Current facilities • Global search • Links to ETDs from the union catalogue (CCUC) • Browsing by subject • In compliance with OAI standards (available next month)
The future • Extending TDX to the rest of Catalan universities • Including all (or nearly all) current theses in TDX • Promoting TDX as the embryo of an institutional repository for Catalan universities • Including (some) old (print) theses and dissertations
