A. Jesus’ love in John 14:21 1. It does not essentially refer to Jesus’ work to make salvation possible. • Incarnation • Active work • Passive work
2. It refers to Jesus’ love to the Christian living the Christian life. Jesus demonstrates this love: • In sending another Comforter, cf. John 14:16; • His High Priestly/mediatorial ministry. Consider the latter.
B. Jesus the Great High Priest Background: There were three distinct offices among the people of God in the Old Testament:
King[ruled over God's people as God’s representative]; • Prophet[spoke to people on behalf of God]; • Priest[offered sacrifices, prayers, praise to God on behalf of the people].
These foreshadowed Jesus’ work. • Jesus is King.Rules over church & universe. • Jesus is Prophet.God with us. Speaks God’s words to us, cf. Deut. 18:15-18. • Jesus is Priest.Only mediator between man & God, cf. 1 Tim. 2:5.
C. Jesus The Great High Priest shows His love for His followers Jesus’ follows the pattern of the OT priest but in different spheres: On earthHe offered Himself a final sacrifice for sin, cf. Heb. 10:12. In HeavenHe intercedes for His people, cf. Heb. 7:25.
Nature of Jesus’ intercession. • It is constant. • It is authoritative. • It is effective.
The content of Jesus’ intercession. Cf. John 17. Jesus loves His own and prays for their:
safekeeping, cf. Jn. 17:11, 15. Also cf. Lk. 22:31-32; • sanctification by the truth, cf. Jn. 17:17; • unity, cf. Jn. 17:20-21; • eventual presence with Him, cf. Jn. 17:24.
Jesus knows what you going to face and He prays! • When you can’t pray for yourself or others, He prays. • When you don’t know what to pray, He prays.
Conclusion – The Comforter • In Heaven, Jesus intercedes for those who love Him. • He is their Comforter, cf. 1 Jn 2:1 • Christian, be comforted! Be encouraged!
