Reading in English… • helps you learn to think in English. • helps you build your English vocabulary. • makes you more comfortable with writing in English. • You can write better in English if you feel comfortable with the language. • may be the only way for you to use English if you live in a non-English-speaking country. • can help you if you plan to study in an English-speaking country.

  4. Reading for Pleasure Reading for pleasure is very important for learning English. It will help you: • learn how English speakers use English • read faster in English • find examples of good writing in English • learn new words • learn about the cultures of English speakers

  5. Choosing a book • Read the front cover and back cover of the book. Do you think the book is interesting? • How many pages are there in the book? It is better to begin with a short book. • If you think you like the book, find out if you can understand it. • THE BOOK SHOULD BE INTERESTING TO YOU.

Reading Rate • Find a full page in your book. • Count the number of words in three lines. • Divide that number by three to get the average number of words in one line. • Count the lines on one page. • (number of lines) x (average words in one line) = (words on a page) • Write the starting time. ___ min. ___ sec. • Finishing time. ___ min. ___ sec. • How many pages did you read? • How many words did you read?
