  1. Higher Modern Studies. DECISION MAKING EXERCISE.

  2. What Is Being Assessed? • Social Issues in the UK – Wealth and Health Inequalities in the UK (Study Theme 2) • In this assessment you must evaluate written and statistical sources based around a key health/ wealth issue. • Examples of health issues are: health inequalities, introduction of a new benefit, creation of a health project etc. • You will then have to make a recommendation based on your analysis of the key issue using your evaluation of the sources and appropriate background information.

  3. Timings • You will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the DME – so keep an eye on the clock!! • You will have to allocate time for reading and analysing the sources and planning and writing the exercise. • Here is a suggested guide for you to work to.

  4. Timings Cont.. • Make sure you are attempting Social Issues in the UK – Wealth and Health Inequalities in the UK (Study Theme 2) • Read the instructions. • Scan the sources – 5 minutes. • SAQs – 10 minutes. • Write DME – 55 minutes. • Read it over – 5 minutes.

  5. Read The Instructions. • It is important to get a general feel of what the exercise requires you to do. It will require you to: • Take on a role and a remit – your role might be as a… • Civil servant. • Adviser. • Consultant. • Chairperson of a committee. • Researcher. • Your remit will be to write a report.

  6. INSTRUCTIONS CONT.. • You will have to make a recommendation. • Give arguments to support your recommendation. • Identify: Criticisms of, opposition to, problems with, implications of, your recommendations and how to answer these. • USE – all of the sources and give appropriate background knowledge.

  7. Suggested report-style format for the DME • Role and Remit – I am (the role you were given) and my remit is (as outlined in the instructions). • Recommendation – having given careful consideration to the evidence I will recommend that (give your recommendation). • Reasons for my recommendation for the following reasons (list of arguments from the plan). You should have no less than 4 of these – maximum 5 • Possible criticisms are: (list of criticisms from the plan). You should have 2 of these if you have 4 recommendations and 3 if you have 5.

  8. Suggested report-style format for the DME cont.. • Reasons for my recommendation. Each heading on the list above now becomes a sub-heading under which you write out the arguments in favour of your recommendation supported by appropriate evidence and background knowledge. You must combine sources/ BK in every recommendation. • Possible criticisms/ response to my critics. Each heading on the list above now becomes a sub-heading under which you write out your criticisms in full, supported by appropriate evidence and background knowledge. Here you expand on your criticisms but it is vital that you respond to them (in other words rubbish/refute the criticisms). • Conclusion – reinforce your recommendation by summarising your arguments. Sign your name and give your role.

  9. Hints! • Lay it out like a report not an essay. • Use all the sources you are given. • When you use a source you must extract the relevant information from it, explain what it means and fit it into your report. You will get no credit if you simply copy the information.

  10. Hints! Cont.. 4. Identify the sources as you use them e.g. ‘As Joe Bloggs says in source A…’ or ‘ The graph (C3) demonstrates that…’ or ‘ it is clear from table C2..’ Tick off each source as you use it. 5. Background knowledge should be identifiable. You might introduce it with such phrases as: ‘From my knowledge…’ ‘In my experience...’ ‘In a video I watched…’
