  1. Chris Szpilka Kendra Dresback, Randy Kolar and Sam Bush ADCIRC Workshop 2014 Infinity Science Center Pearlington, MS April 3- 4 ADCIRC Tidal Databases

  2. Topics Covered • ADCIRC modifications • East coast tidal database (EC2013) • Grid improvements • Bottom friction options • Run parameters • Results • West coast tidal database • Grid development

  3. Version 51.06 Modifications • Problem: Global harmonic output • memory issue –problem with large grids, numerous constituents • too many constituents and stations – led to problems initializing the arrays for the elevation and velocities • present on several computing architectures – TACC, OSCER, ERDC • Solution: • changed from global to local output – harmonic and hotstart • use command line options • –M write local files for harmonics • –S write local hotstart files • –R read local hotstart files • adcpost required to develop the global fort.5* files

  4. Topics Covered • ADCIRC modifications • East coast tidal database (EC2013) • Grid improvements • Bottom friction options • Run parameters • Results • West coast tidal database • Grid development

  13. ADCIRC Bottom Friction Options • NOLIBF • 0 – linear bottom friction • 1 – quadratic function of depth averaged velocity • NWP – nodal attributes in fort.13 • quadratic_friction_coefficient_at_sea_floor • mannings_n_at_sea_floor (converted to equivalent quadratic friction coefficient) • CF(t) = (g*n2)/cuberoot[depth+WSE(t)] • Upper limit – CF value from fort.15

  14. Basic ADCIRC Options • Tidal forcing: TPXO 7.2 OTIS • Forced with 13 constituents (M2, S2, N2, K2, K1, O1, P1, Q1, Mf, Mm, M4, MS4, MN4) • ADCIRC parameters • Δt=1.0 sec • NOLI terms = 1 2 1 1 • tau0 = -1 (spatially varying but constant in time; it is calculated according to depth as follows: If the depth is >=10 tau0 is set to 0.005, if the depth is < 10, tau0 is set to 0.020) • ESL=5 • NWP otis1: NWP=0 CF is constant (0.0025) otis3: NWP=1 VDatum CF otis4(5): NWP=1 Mannings n (90% Mannings n) • Run a 20-day ramp for tidal spinup, then run another 25 days before start harmonic analysis for last 365 days (410-day total run)

  15. NOAA CO-OPS Data Locations http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ Harmonic data for up to 37 constituents at 404 stations. Open Inland Protected

  16. Error Measures • Mean absolute error: amplitude and phase • RMS: Ae = (0.5 Am2 + 0.5 Ao2 – AmAo cos(ho-hm))1/2 • Relative RMS: Ar = Ae/Ao

  17. Ongoing Work • Project wrapping up but… • Additional runs • FES2012 with constant CF (for comparison) • Increased Manning n (110% - for sensitivity) • Modified VDatum CF in Chesapeake Bay and NY Sound

  18. Topics Covered • ADCIRC modifications • East coast tidal database (EC2013) • Grid improvements • Tidal forcing • Bottom friction • Results • West coast tidal database • Grid development

  19. ENPAC 2003 Grid Coverage

  20. ESTOFS Pacific Coverage

  21. VDatum Coverage 1 2 3 • SE Alaska (not done) • PacificNW01 • sc8b_MZ_011806

  22. Coastal Detail 1 2 3 • SE Alaska (not done) • Vancouver Island (Foreman) • Merged VDatum coasts • Black – ESTOFS boundary • Red – coastal sources (map)

  23. New WC2014 Coverage

  24. Vancouver Island Detail

  25. West Coast Summary • Grid development is ongoing • Add SE Alaska when done • Fill in region of BC? • Next steps: • Collect input files from original VDatum and Foreman meshes • Begin building global input files • Verify location of CO-OPS stations for input file • Debugging…
