  1. 5/16 Adv. Alg/Trig Bell Ringer A jar has 3 colors of marbles: Blue, Green and Red. If you draw 2 marbles, How many possible combinations of 2 marbles are there? (b) What’s the probability that you select 2 blues? Homework: Finish today’s independent practice.

  2. 5/16 News and Notes: • Perfection: 4th • MVPs: • 2nd: JESUS G. • 4th: CHRISTIAN • Missing Quizzes – Today after school: • 2nd: Jahmeelah, Edna, Jarod, Jairo • 4th: Alexis, Janet, Monica, Victor, Shacora, Jasmine

  3. Quick Definition Review • Independent: The outcome of two events have NO INFLUENCE on each other. • Dependent: The outcome of one event INFLUENCES the next.

  4. Today: P(A ∩ B) • What does that mean? P(A ∩ B) = The probability that event A and event B both occur. Examples: Probability of getting two heads, probability of drawing an ace and a king, probability of rolling a 3, a 5 and a 2 on three dice, etc…

  5. Independent Example • The next two days’ exit tickets are multiple choice with 4 choices. What’s the probability that you get both correct if you guess? • Independent or Dependent? • Independent! • P(A) = Probability you get Day 1 right. • P(B) = Probability you get Day 2 right. • P(A ∩ B) = Probability you get both right.

  6. P(A) = ¼ = 0.25 P(B) = ¼ = 0.25 P(A ∩ B) = P(A)*P(B) = 0.25 * 0.25 = 0.0625

  7. Dependent Example • You have 4 cards (1 heart, 1 spade, 1 diamond, and 1 club). What’s the probability of selecting a heart on your first card and a club on your second? • Independent or Dependent? • Dependent • P(A) = Probability of a heart • P(B) = Probability of a club • P(A ∩ B) = Prob. of a heart then a club.

  8. P(A ∩ B) = P(A)*P(B|A) • P(A) = ¼ = 0.25 • P(B|A) = 1/3 = 0.3333 • P(A ∩ B) = 0.25 * 0.333333 = .083333 *** KEY: ORDER MATTERS!!!! P(B) GIVEN THAT A OCCURS

  9. Guided Practice (Follow steps carefully) • A class has 5 boys and 5 girls. What’s the probability that a boy is selected and then a girl is selected? • HINT: Does order matter? At top of card: INDEPENDENT OR DEPENDENT?

  10. What is P(A)? Write your probability on your card. P(A) = 5/10 = 0.5 • What is P(B)? Write your probability on your card. P(B) = P(B|A) = 5/9 = 0.555 • What is P(A ∩ B)? Write final answer! P(A ∩ B) = 0.27777

  11. Independent Practice

  12. Exit Ticket • You have 4 shirts of all different colors and 5 shorts of all different colors. What’s the probability that you randomly end up wearing a red shirt AND blue shorts? • 0.05 • 0.20 • 0.25 • 0.45
