  3. Objectives • SWBAT find squares of sums and differences. • SWBAT find the product of a sum and a difference. • Students will look for and make use of structure.

  4. Example 1: Square of a Sum (a + b)2 = (a + b)(a + b) = a2 + 2ab + b2 Find (3x + 5)2 Guided Practice #1) a) (8c + 3d)2 b) (3x + 4y)2

  5. Example 2: Square of a Difference (a- b)2 = (a- b)(a- b) = a2- 2ab + b2 Find (2x – 5y)2 Guided Practice #2 a) (6p – 1)2 b) (a – 2b)2

  6. Example 3: Square of a Difference • Each edge of the cube is 4 cm less than each of a cube of copper. Write an equation to model the surface area of the aluminum cube.

  7. Guided Practice #3 (pg. 487) • Alano has a garden that is g feet long and g feet wide. He wants to add 3 feet to the length and the width. • Show how the new area of the garden can be modeled by the square of a binomial. • Find the square of the binomial.
