Part one: broad statement • Start with some broad ideas about your general topic • There are several techniques you can use: • Fact • Quotation • Question • Personal thought • Example: A world circumnavigation is “a journey of 40,075 km or 24, 901 miles (the circumference of the world at its widest point) following a perfect circle around the planet” (Angus Adventures).It takes a special kind of person to complete a task of such magnitude.

Part two: Introduce the work • Next, introduce the text(s) • Include author(s) • Give a brief overview of the text, in relation to your topic • Example: Beyond the Horizon, by Colin Angus, describes the very task of a world circumnavigation. Colin tells his own story which reveals how his extraordinary character impacts this vast expedition. It becomes apparent to the reader that he needs to be more than just fit to accomplish his goal.

  6. Part three: thesis • End your introduction with your thesis statement • This statement presents your argument for your whole essay • Your discussions should connect back to this argument

  7. Thesis in detail • Present an argument • Use parallelism • Aim to answer the question “so what?” • Example: Colin demonstrates both physical and mental strength. So what? Colin demonstrates that in order to complete his expedition he must possess physical and mental strength.
