  1. Lab 4 Astrand-Rhyming Submaximal Cycle Ergometer Test (Modified) to Estimate VO2 max

  2. Estimating VO2 max • A means of describing the cardiorespiratory endurance fitness level of an individual • The relationship of power output to VO2 remains fairly constant • By knowing power output, the corresponding VO2 can be predicted with reasonable accuracy • The proportion to which HR increases in comparison to power output or VO2 will vary between individuals based on fitness level

  3. Ability to Predict VO2 max • Based on the fact that the heart pumps more efficiently and oxygen is used more readily for metabolism in individuals with higher VO2 max capabilities. • If two individuals are performing at the same power output (requiring the same rate of oxygen consumption), the individual with the higher VO2 max will tend to have a lower HR.

  4. Example: If a 20 year old, 154-pound male had an average HR of 150 bpm during the last two minutes of a 900 kgm ∙ min-1 power output (3 kg resistance at 50 rpm) his values would be: 1. preliminary VO2 max value from Table 4.1 = 3.2 L ∙min-1 2. 3.2 x 1.07 (age correction factor, Table 4.3) = 3.425 L ∙min-1 3. VO2max = (3425 mL ∙min-1) / 70 kg = 48.9 mL ∙kg-1 ∙min-1 (Body weight = 70 kg) 4. Fitness category (Table 4.4) = excellent Astrand-Rhyming Test Example
