A game of who’s who… As we go through this list of famous faces you must: • Name the celebrity. • If you know who it is, decide whether you feel mostly positive about this person OR mostly negative. If you don’t know who it is, guess at what they do. • Write down why you answered the way you did for question #2.

(Skills that can be applied to other subjects and life beyond the classroom) • Why is media literacy/media studies important (especially for your generation)?

Why or why not? • What are you hoping to learning in this course? (topics covered, skills developed...) • Which “type of media are you most interested in and why? (TV, film, news, advertising, music...)

What should you expect? • To explore a broad range of media works and audience responses to them (analysis of the forms and messages of media, creation of your own media works). • Understand and interpret media texts (purpose, message/meaning, audience responses) • Understand the impact of media on society (representations of people, issues, values, and behaviours) • Understand the media industry (how are media texts created, ownership, control, privacy) • Creation, careers, metacognition (your growth as media consumers and media producers) *Note – You may already be an expert in one of these areas.

  9. What do I/your classmates expect? • RESPECT – Every opinion is valid. • Participation – Class is boring without it! This is not a university-style lecture class. • Professionalism (responsibility, attendance, collaboration…) • No eating – cell phone usage
