What is School Bullying? www.education.com • Bullying is an intentional act in which a child wants to harm the victim • Bullying involves repeated occurrences – generally not a random act or single incident • Bullying is not the same as “playing around,” it is about the abuse of power www.stopybullyingnow.hrsa.gov • It is not a phase children have to go through, it is not "just messing around“ • Bullying can take many forms: verbal, social, physical & cyberbullying • A school is responsible for addressing harassment incidents about which it knows or reasonably should have known

Helpful Sites for Counselors/Educators www.discoveryeducation.com • Professional Development is helpful in increasing student achievement and engaging teachers • Discovery Education offers free student resources http://ikeepsafe.org • The three main risks are: • Inappropriate Contact –Teach kids how to recognize and protect themselves against contact with cyber-bullies, hackers, phishers, and predators. . • Inappropriate Content – Help kids understand that the Internet is forever: everything they post online is tracked and stored and will follow them to future job interviews and  college entrance interviews. • Inappropriate Conduct – Teach kids that the Internet is a public forum:  anonymity is a myth.  Help them be the good person online that they are when they’re offline.
