WBQ Intermediate PSE
This guide provides an overview of the research process and the essential elements required for your Intermediate PSE project. You will learn how to recognize the components of research, including formulating hypotheses, collecting data systematically, and analyzing results. The project requires a comparative study with a focus on Wales and another region, aiming for a word count of 1500-2000 words. Key sections include a title page, contents page, images, data, and bibliography. Start by exploring topics of personal interest and plan effectively to complete your research successfully.

WBQ IntermediatePSE Research Project
WALT • To recognise what research involves • To plan individual research projects Starter: • Build a Spider diagram of all the topics you have covered in PSE so far. • Add to this all of your interests. • Add to this the other subjects you have studied in school so far
WBQ Core Requirement • You must produce a research project. • Intermediate = 1500-2000 words • You Must include; Title page Contents page • images, diagrams, statistical data and graphs • Bibliography
What is research? • “The systematic and rigorous process of enquiry which aims to describe phenomena and to develop explanatory concepts and theories. Ultimately it aims to contribute to a scientific body of knowledge.”
Research • Research enquires involve: • Putting forward ideas that can be tested (hypothesis) • Collecting data to test these ideas in a systematic way • Analysing the collected data • Drawing conclusions based on research evidence.
The Welsh Dimension • The research project must compare your chosen topic’s relevance to Wales to somewhere else in the world. • For EG; • Title = Teen Pregnancies • Hypothesis = Wales has the highest teen pregnancies in Europe. • Comparison = Welsh statistics to England to somewhere else in Europe to Africa • You would analyse reasons for the differences.
Contents • Plan • Introduction • Wales • Other Country • Comparison of two • Questionnaire • Questionnaire Results • Conclusion • Evaluation • Bibliography
What do you want to research? • What interests you? Sport, Fashion etc • What have you studied this year? Did you cover an issue in PE/ART/MEDIA you would like to expand on • What will be easy to collect data about? MP Expenses Anti Social Behaviour Knife Crime Teen Pregnancy The Ressession Obesity The Environment Substance misuse
Task • Decide what topic you will research. This is your Title. • A hypothesis is a statement you can test. Decide on a statement to do with your topic. For example; Title = Obesity Hypothesis = Children in Wales are obese because they play to many video games
Research Plan • All research needs a plan • What is your aim? • What resources will you need? • What will you do? (step by step) • How will you do it? • When will you do it by? **It is essential that you specify timeframes ie; 4th July 2012 etc**
