  1. Residents’ perceptions of assessment and feedback in a Surgical Department : Supervisors must do better! RJ Oostenbroek, PW Plaisier, JMM van de Ridder. Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Dordrecht, the Netherlands. Research question: Assessment of and feedback on performance are very important in the residents´ learning process. We studied how supervisors’ skills and the learning climate were perceived by surgical residents. Summary of work: The Dutch Residents Educational Climate Test (D-RECT) and Systematic Evaluation of Teaching Qualities (SET-Q) were used to answer these questions. Surgical residents filled out the D-RECT and SET-Q in 2009-2011. Scales scores (Likert 1-5) were dertermined. Residents’ perception of supervisors’ skills Residents’ perception of actual assessment and feedback quality Coaching & Assessment (8-item scale) Observation & Feedback (3-item scale) Feedback Skills Coaching Skills Goal Setting Skills Conclusions: Residents perceive supervisors’ feedback and assessment skills as reasonably good. Feedback and assessment are perceived as the weakest part of the learning climate. Take-home message: The discrepancy between supervisors´ feedback and assessment skills and actual feedback as perceived by residents needs more attention. Information:Peter W.
